One year earlier the same country accounted for a little over 80% of installations, so the shift is both real and fast.

What follows is the evidence behind that number, where it gets shaky, which companies actually ship, what the machines cost with the verification path and date for every figure, and what changes for you if you buy one and run it outside China. How Many Humanoid Robots Does China Actually Build?

Smart Analytics Global put Chinese manufacturers at 97% of global humanoid shipments in the first half of 2026, with about 19,100 units shipped worldwide. Forbes reported the figure in August 2026, and it has been repeated widely since.

Two clarifications before that number gets quoted further. First, the Forbes headline reports up to 30,000 units year to date at the time of writing in late August, while the 19,100 figure is the first half alone, so the two are not in conflict. Second, Counterpoint Research, measuring the same six months, counted more than 22,000 units globally and put the year on year growth near 300%. Two credible houses, one period, a gap of roughly 3,000 machines. For the full year, Counterpoint projects more than 50,000 units while Smart Analytics Global expects around 60,000.

The direction is not in dispute and the margin is not close. The precision implied by a figure like “97%” is a different matter, and anyone quoting it to two significant figures is quoting one vendor’s model.

The 2025 baseline shows the same spread. Counterpoint put China at more than 80% of global installations, with Unitree at 5,500 units and AgiBot at 5,168. Omdia, measuring shipments rather than installations, put the Chinese share of 2025 at roughly 90% (Omdia, January 2026), which is the figure I use elsewhere on this site. Three houses, one year, a range of ten percentage points. Reading 80% and 97% as a clean year on year jump therefore compares two different measurement methods, which is why I treat the trend as certain and the second digit as noise.

Model variety tells the same story from a different angle. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said at a briefing on July 20, 2026 that Chinese firms have developed more than 400 complete humanoid robot products, more than half the world’s total. That is the ministry’s own count of its own industry, and no independent research house has replicated it, so it belongs in the same bracket as the vendor figures above rather than above them.

Which Chinese Companies Build Humanoid Robots?

Five names carry most of the volume. AgiBot shipped roughly 8,400 units in the first half of 2026 and took the top spot. Unitree followed with about 5,900. UBTech, Galbot and Leju make up most of the remainder, and EngineAI and XPeng’s robotics unit are scaling behind them.

The concentration matters more than the roster. Two companies account for three quarters of global humanoid shipments, and both are Chinese. Unitree has also gone public. Its shares closed 460% above their IPO price on the first day of trading in Shanghai in August 2026 (CNBC). That matters for buyers rather than investors, because a listed manufacturer has to publish financials, and audited numbers are a different class of evidence from a shipment claim in a press release.

How Much Does a Humanoid Robot in China Cost?

Every price below comes from my audited comparison. Each figure was confirmed on the manufacturer’s own store, order page or self-operated flagship store, never on a third-party reseller or an aggregator, and the date in the third column is the date of that check. All figures are outright purchase prices, not lease or robot-as-a-service rates. Prices move, so treat the date as part of the number.

One caution that shows why the verification step is not optional. Press coverage of the EngineAI T800 described it as entering mass production at around $25,000. The maker’s own international price list runs $40,500 to $80,800 across four editions. Both statements can be traced, but only one is a price you can pay, and the gap between a headline and a checkout page is where most published robot prices go wrong. Why Is China Ahead in Humanoid Robots?

Three advantages compound, and none of them is a software breakthrough.

The first is the component supply chain. McKinsey data cited in a policy paper by Agility Robotics, itself a US humanoid maker with a direct interest in the argument, puts China at roughly 90% of global permanent magnet capacity, the material that goes into the motors moving every joint. A humanoid has dozens of actuators. When one country holds that share of a core input, it does not merely build cheaper, it builds sooner, because nobody waits in a queue behind an export process.

The second is deliberate standards policy. In August 2026 China proposed formulating at least 100 key humanoid robot standards by 2028, reported by Xinhua.

Standards are usually treated as a compliance cost. Set early and set domestically, they are closer to an industrial subsidy: they tell hundreds of suppliers what to build against before the export market has decided anything.

The third is capital. Unitree’s Shanghai listing closed 460% above its IPO price on its first day of trading, which is the kind of funding environment that lets a manufacturer price hardware close to cost and treat the deployment data as the actual product.

What Changes if You Buy One and Run It Outside China?

Legally, less than most buyers expect, and that surprises people in both directions. Buying a humanoid robot in China does not put you under a different rulebook once the machine is on your floor.

Where the machine was built does not change the rules it has to meet on your floor. A humanoid working alongside people in a European or American plant sits under the same industrial robot safety baseline as any other machine, and ISO 10218 was revised in 2025 to raise the documentation and risk assessment bar. If a non-Chinese supplier is a hard requirement for you, whether for procurement policy, supply chain or data residency, the European field is thin and worth knowing in detail. What origin does change is availability and paperwork.   1. Confirm the price on the manufacturer’s own property, not a reseller listing.
  2. Ask which entity provides the CE or equivalent conformity documentation, and in which language.
  3. Confirm spare part lead times and who performs warranty work in your country.
  4. Establish whether support is available in your timezone.

None of that is China specific. It is simply where imported industrial equipment usually goes wrong, and a low sticker price makes it tempting to skip.
